Mental Strength: pt1-Elite Mindset: E+R=O

Coaches often talk about having an "ELITE MINDSET" however most coaches do not know exactly what this is. Well here I am ready to explain it all to you.


First off let talk about what is the definition of Elite Mindset. This is the belief that everything can be trained/accomplished via learning a skill at a top level.


Now that we have this information lets look at the process to reach to a goal:


  1. Set your intention or goal and what is the timeframe you want to reach this. Lets talk about the sport of baseball/softball....you want to reach a goal of having a 90 mph exit velocity in hitting with a goal date of January 30th.

  2. Schedule It! If you don't have your days/weeks planned out they will quickly get away from you. Recommend using Google Calendar as this way you can have someone also look in and give you assistance if needed.

  3. Measure it: people need a score to keep the progress. For instance you want to know your current exit velocity and if you happen to increase or decrease every week until your goal is met. If your velocity increases each week you know you are on the right path. If it decreases you know you need to make some changes in your calendar.

  4. Reflect and Refocus: Each week you should reflect at the past week and look at what worked and what did not when it comes to your goals. For some we like to call this the START, STOP, CONTINUE process. This reflection should happen at the end of the week and when you begin to plan for the follow week.


E+R=O (Event + Response = Outcome)


This one little quiz when applied to yourself can take you far in reaching your goals.


An EVENT is anything that happens to you. (you don't control EVENTS)

Your RESPONSE is the only thing you control (you DO control your RESPONSE)

The OUTCOME is something that is well out of your control. (you create OUTCOMES but don't control them, only impact them)


When a person is taught about controlling their responses to any situation (event) and how this response has an impact on the outcome you will go further in you goals.


For instance.... the umpire makes a bad call (in your mind) and you make a comment or face while pitching. What do you think the umpire is going to do? Yep, that's right, the umpire will not be giving you any close calls for a while all because of your response to one call. Now if you would have done nothing at all they umpire wouldn't hold your response against you. Like the problem shows ---- your RESPONSE can have an impact on the OUTCOME. More on this in the future.


I know this is a lot to take in right now however this is the basis of getting to your goals. Yes it seems simple but who says that reaching a goal has to be hard. I want to coach you on how to reach all your goals both on and off the field.
